Front Range Fire Weather Forecast

NWS Red Flag Fire Weather Warnings are in effect today for areas of the Palmer Divide and NE plains as well as W and SW Colorado.

Front Range Fire Weather Forecast:  Approaching trough of low pressure from the west will result in strengthening SW winds as the day progresses along the Front Range of Colorado.  Wind speeds will range from 10-25mph with gusts to 30-35mph possible.  There will also be a chance for isolated high based thunderstorms this afternoon producing gusty and erratic winds upwards of 50mph, a few sprinkles of rain and “dry” lightning.  Relative humidity values will drop into the upper single digits and teens during hours of maximum heating.  Relief will arrive overnight in the form of a cold front that is expected to move through from north to south after midnight.  By sunrise on Saturday there will be a low cloud deck with isolated rain showers most areas.  Showers and thunderstorms are expected on Saturday with a wetting rain likely.

Rockies Game Day Forecast

The game between the Arizona Diamondbacks versus the Colorado Rockies will be an afternoon game with the first pitch at 1:10pm.  Generally dry conditions are expected for the duration but a very isolated high based shower or weak thunderstorm will be possible over the Denver Metro area this afternoon with little or no impact on the game.  Gusty winds and possibly some sprinkles will be the most likely outcome for storms today with many areas on the dry side.  Temperatures will be in the lower 80s for the game under mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies.  A great day to be outside and cheer on the Rockies as they try and sweep the 2 game series with the Diamondbacks.  GO ROCKIES!!!

Solar Eclipse May 20th

The annual solar eclipse will take place later this month on May 20th.  This will be a partial eclipse for the US with the SW states being one of the few places where it can bee seen before the sun sets.  Albuquerque NM and Page AZ will be very near the fullest point in the path of the eclipse and it will occur in the evening before sunset and will last for about 4-5 minutes.  More about the annual solar eclipse can be found at NASA and a good map of the path of the eclipse was made by Xavier M. Jubier.

Mothers Day Forecast

Cloudy and cool for many areas of eastern Colorado this morning.  There will be some periods of sunshine peeking through the clouds at times during the day but rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will on the increase by early afternoon.  Best chances to see some rain today will be over the mountains and along the I-25 corridor extending out along the Palmer Divide and into SE Colorado.  Temperatures will be in the 60s most areas on the plains with some 50′s closer to I-25 and 40′s in the foothills.  Northern and NW areas of the state will have the best chances of being on the dry side today.  Showers and thunderstorms will diminish from NW to SE over the state this evening and early overnight with a dry day in store for Monday along with warmer temperatures.

Snow in the Mountains and Foothills

A cold rain fell over the plains yesterday with the snow line briefly reaching about the 6,000′ foot level in parts of the foothills.  There were some minor snow accumulations reported in the mountains and foothills which can bee seen below.  On the plains rainfall amounts generally ranged form 0.08-0.30″ with some higher and lower amounts mixed in.  There is a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of the Sangre de Cristo and Sawatch mountains as well as Pikes Peak until 6pm Sunday.  Some of the higher peaks in these ranges may pick up another 5-10″ of snow.  Good news as the snow pack has been melting early and below normal snowfall was common in mountainous areas of the state this winter.  Some improvement for northern Colorado on Mothers Day with just isolated showers but more rain and thunderstorms for central and southern Colorado.can be expected.  Many areas will have to wait until Monday to completely dry out.

Snow for the High Country

The mountains and higher foothills of the state have been receiving some snow today and even some THUNDERSNOW in places!  I-70 westbound at mile marker 190 has been closed due to numerous accidents due to the snow.  Some areas are reporting snowfall at this hour of:

2.1″ near Twin Lakes outside of Leadville and 1″ near Fairplay.

Many locations in the Jefferson and Boulder County foothills have also received measurable snow with minor short lived accumulations pavement.  Snow will continue possible through 10-11pm then drier conditions are expected for the remainder of the overngiht.  I-70 will surely re-open but more rain and snow is expected tomorrow and again on Sunday.

30 Degrees Cooler Today

Temperatures in eastern Colorado will be some 30 degrees cooler today as a cold front moved through overnight with most areas in the 50s and some 60s in southeastern parts of the state..  There will be a good chance for most areas of central and eastern Colorado to pick up some precipitation today.  The higher mountain peaks will pick up some snow with thundersnow in some areas.  The cooler temperatures on the plains will result in a better chance for rain versus thunderstorms but there will likely be a few isolated thunderstorms this afternoon.  More of the same can be expected for Saturday with the heaviest precipitation in southeastern portions of the state.

Cooler Weather to move into CO on Friday

Unseasonably warm weather today over the state of Colorado will come to an end tonight as a cold front moves through ushering in cooler air and a chance for rain showers and thunderstorms on Friday.  The cool temperatures on the plains will help to limit thunderstorm activity but there could be some rumbles of thunder in the mountains and foothills.  Temperatures tomorrow on the plains will be in the 50s most areas with some 60s in SE Colorado.  The coldest air will remain east of the Continental Divide.  Good chances for a wetting rain will occur Friday afternoon and evening into the day on Saturday.

May Snow!

Although not uncommon in May for Colorado some areas of the state have picked up some accumulating snow at higher elevations yesterday and last night.  Snow will continue to fall at higher elevations today adding to the totals shown below.  NWS WInter Weather Advisories remain in place until 6pm this evening for the northern Front Range foothills and mountains.  The snow reports are from the NWS in Boulder and the NWS in Pueblo.
